History of Gasthof Zur Traube
Gasthof Zur Traube over time
In 1807, over 200 years ago, the then owner and innkeeper Egidius Bauer was granted the ‘right to display a sign for the Traube inn’ in Eisental. The inn, which was popular for its food and cosy atmosphere, became the centre of village life. This was especially true when Edigius Bauer cleverly arranged for the new church to be built right next to the inn in 1820 through a land donation.
In 1863, part of the inn burned down, but it was rebuilt immediately afterwards.
After the First World War, the hospitality business flourished under his son Ludwig Bauer. Even the high society of fashionable Baden-Baden was now among the regular guests.
Shortly before the end of the war in 1945, Ludwig Bauer lost both his sons in the turmoil of war. He never got over this loss. Ludwig Bauer initially leased the inn, but later, in April 1958, he sold the Traube to the Ludwig Fröhlich family from Baden-Baden.
Having a certain name comes with certain obligations. With the Fröhlich family, happiness and joy returned to the Gasthof zur Traube. Ludwig Fröhlich was a bakery owner in Baden-Baden and showed double courage in investing in a run-down inn during an economically difficult time. With a lot of hard work, dedication and determination, the couple succeeded in restoring the inn to its former glory: a traditional guesthouse where guests enjoy staying.
Generational change
In 1983, the Fröhlichs handed over the Traube to their children, Marlene and Klaus Fröhlich. This marked the beginning of a new era, because – like father, like son – Klaus Fröhlich first invested in renovating the inn and its restaurant. Following their own rules, the Fröhlichs preserved the traditions of the Traube that guests appreciate today: the original, rustic dining room, where you can enjoy freshly prepared regional cuisine and homemade pastries from the chef, served with a warm smile from the hostess.
In 2019 – the Wagners arrive
The Fröhlich era came to an end after more than 60 years. After Marlene and Klaus Fröhlich's two children had pursued different career paths, the inn was sold to Marion and Patrick Wagner. It is very important to the Wagners that the tradition established by the Fröhlichs over the past decades is preserved.
Unfortunately, Patrick Wagner passed away in December 2023. However, his family continues to run the Gasthof zur Traube in his spirit.
A house to stay in
The entries in the guest book show that the world is a guest at the Traube in Eisental. The famous Spanish artist César Manrique was a regular guest for many years, and the Fröhlichs also hosted some of the English national football team's entourage during the 2006 World Cup. Many companies from the region book the generously furnished and newly renovated apartments of the inn for their guest employees, who usually stay in the Ortenau region for a longer period of time.
